OpenAI isn't just adding two banking executives to its board—it's preparing for what could become one of the biggest public offerings in technology history.
The ChatGPT developer has appointed Robin Vince, chairman and CEO of BNY, and David Vélez, founder and CEO of Nubank, to the boards of both the OpenAI Foundation and OpenAI Group PBC. While the move may appear to be a routine governance update, it comes as OpenAI strengthens its leadership ahead of a potential IPO and an increasingly competitive global AI race.
The appointments also bring together leaders from two very different corners of finance: one oversees one of the world's largest custodial banks, while the other built one of the world's largest digital banks. Together, they represent exactly the kind of experience investors expect to see on the board of a future public company.

Preparing for Public Markets
OpenAI confidentially filed draft registration documents for a U.S. IPO earlier this year, joining rival Anthropic in what could become one of Silicon Valley's defining corporate rivalries.
Recent reports suggest OpenAI could ultimately pursue a valuation approaching $1 trillion, following its latest fundraising round that reportedly valued the company at roughly $850 billion. Although the company has not committed to a listing date, the board expansion suggests preparations are well underway.
The appointments also continue OpenAI's governance overhaul following the 2023 boardroom crisis that briefly removed CEO Sam Altman before his rapid reinstatement. Since then, the company has steadily strengthened independent oversight while evolving from an AI research lab into one of the fastest-growing commercial technology companies in history.
Why These Two CEOs Matter
Neither appointment appears accidental. Robin Vince leads BNY, one of the world's oldest and largest financial institutions, overseeing approximately $62.6 trillion in assets under custody and administration. His background spans financial markets, corporate governance and risk management—expertise that becomes increasingly valuable as OpenAI prepares for life as a public company.
