Lattes Over Lambos: Crypto Starts Acting Like Real Money

Crypto has long been defined by trading. But new data from OKX suggests a quieter shift is underway — one that points to real-world usage.

Across Europe, early activity on the OKX Card shows crypto beginning to function as a true medium of exchange, not just a speculative asset.

From Wallets to Checkout

In its first month, the largest spending category wasn’t luxury — it was groceries, making up 26% of all transactions.

The rest looks familiar:

  • Restaurants and fast food: 18%

  • Online shopping: 13%

  • Convenience and retail: among the top categories

More than one in four transactions happening in supermarkets signals something important — this is routine spending, not edge-case usage.

As Erald Ghoos, CEO of OKX Europe, noted, the data challenges the idea that crypto users spend on luxury. Instead, they’re paying for everyday items — groceries, coffee, and meals. When crypto pays for lunch, adoption is real.

What matters most isn’t just where people spend — it’s how often.

Payments systems are built on high-frequency activity, and that’s exactly where crypto is starting to show traction. Instead of occasional large transactions, users are making small, repeat purchases — the foundation of real payment behavior.

At the same time, travel is emerging as a meaningful category, accounting for 11% of total volume across Europe and roughly 20% in the Netherlands.

Fewer transactions, but larger size — showing crypto is being used for both everyday spending and higher-value purchases.

Spending patterns also reflect regional habits:

  • France: more bakery and café transactions

  • Germany: heavy ecommerce usage (30%)

  • Netherlands: strong supermarket dominance (37%)

  • Poland: higher convenience and fuel spending

Why It Matters

With low fees, seamless conversion, and acceptance anywhere Mastercard works, the OKX Card highlights a broader shift: crypto infrastructure is becoming a usable payments layer.
