A corporate bond comes with a straightforward promise: a company borrows money, pays interest and returns the principal when the bond matures.

Startale Japan is changing how those payments reach investors.

The company has announced Startale Bond, a digital corporate bond that will pay both scheduled interest and the final repayment of principal in JPYSC, a yen-denominated stablecoin issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank.

Startale describes it as Japan’s first digital corporate bond to use a yen-denominated trust-type stablecoin for both payments, based on its research as of September 30.

The significance is in the use case. A stablecoin developed by a banking group and a blockchain company will serve as the payment mechanism for a conventional corporate financing instrument.

From Trading Tokens to Repaying Investors

Stablecoins are widely associated with crypto trading, payments and remittances. Startale Bond brings them into another financial relationship: the one between a company raising money and the investors lending it.

Bondholders will receive interest in JPYSC throughout the bond’s life. At maturity, they will also receive their principal back in JPYSC.

That gives the stablecoin a recurring role in servicing corporate debt, extending its use beyond transfers between digital-asset wallets.

Startale Japan Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Startale Group, is the legal issuer of the bond. The offering is limited to individuals and companies in Japan and is not available to overseas investors.

The announcement does not disclose the bond’s size, interest rate, maturity or minimum investment. Those details will matter when assessing the offering itself, separately from the technology used to make its payments.

The Banking Infrastructure Behind JPYSC

JPYSC was developed through a collaboration between SBI Group and Startale Group, with responsibilities divided across three companies.

SBI Shinsei Trust Bank issues the stablecoin and manages the trust assets backing it. SBI VC Trade serves as the issuance trustor and leads issuance and distribution. Startale Group provides the supporting technology.

According to the announcement, JPYSC is designed to track the Japanese yen one-to-one and qualifies as a Type 3 Electronic Payment Instrument under Japan’s Payment Services Act.

Startale Bond puts that infrastructure to work in a corporate financing transaction. The practical test is whether stablecoin payments can become a useful part of how companies meet their obligations to investors.

A Pilot for Broader Corporate Fundraising

“By bringing finance onchain, we want to create new options for corporate fundraising and individual investment,” said Sota Watanabe, CEO of Startale Group Pte. Ltd.

“With this bond issuance, we are piloting JPYSC for actual interest and principal redemption payments. Learnings from this initiative will allow us to eventually expand this mechanism to a wide range of businesses across Japan, creating new mechanisms where people can continuously support companies through investment.”

That ambition puts corporate fundraising at the center of the project. If the mechanism can be extended to other businesses, stablecoin payments could become part of how companies maintain financial relationships with their investors over time.

“We will continue pushing this frontier with the hope that, looking back in the years to come, this initiative will be remembered as a major turning point in finance,” Watanabe added.

What This First Issuance Could Show

Startale’s broader vision will depend on what follows this initial bond. A single issuance establishes a use case; wider adoption would require more companies and investors to use the structure.

The immediate significance is more specific. Startale is putting JPYSC into an actual corporate debt payment schedule, covering both the income investors receive and the return of the money they lent.

The company says the experience could inform future applications involving businesses, financial institutions and tokenized assets. For now, Startale Bond gives that work a practical starting point: a company borrowing money and using digital yen to pay its bondholders back.
