Binance Rolls Out Withdrawal Lock to Combat Physical Crypto Threats

Binance has launched a new withdrawal lock feature aimed at protecting users from physical threats and coercion — commonly referred to in the crypto community as "wrench attacks."

The feature operates as an internal policy mechanism rather than a cryptographic lock, allowing users to freeze their ability to withdraw funds from the exchange during periods when they may be under duress.

The term "wrench attack" — a reference to the idea that a $5 wrench can defeat even the most sophisticated encryption if used to physically threaten a crypto holder — has become an increasingly urgent concern as the value of digital assets has grown.

The feature represents Binance's latest effort to address a category of risk that sits outside the traditional scope of cybersecurity: real-world, physical violence targeting crypto holders for their funds.

How the Lock Changes the Game

Binance’s withdrawal lock is designed around one idea: remove the ability to act under pressure.

Once enabled, withdrawals are completely disabled for a set period — and cannot be overridden, even by the account holder. That’s the point. In a wrench attack scenario, where someone is physically forced to transfer funds, the victim simply can’t comply.

It flips the incentive. If funds can’t move on demand, there’s no reason to apply coercion in the first place.

The concept isn’t new — traditional finance has used time-locked vaults for decades. But applying it at the exchange level brings that logic into crypto custody at scale.

Why It Matters — And What It Doesn’t Solve

Physical attacks targeting crypto holders are rising, with recent cases across Europe involving kidnappings, home invasions, and forced transfers. Crypto’s speed and irreversibility make these attacks especially attractive — once funds are sent, recovery is unlikely.

That’s the gap this feature targets. But it comes with trade-offs.

Because the lock is enforced by Binance — not by cryptography — users are trusting the platform’s systems and policies. It’s a different model than protocol-level protections like timelocks or multisig. There’s also a usability balance: too rigid, and users risk locking themselves out during real situations; too flexible, and the protection loses meaning.

And importantly, it only applies to funds held on the exchange. Self-custody users won’t benefit, though some wallet providers are exploring their own duress features.

Still, the bigger shift is clear. Under CEO Richard Teng, this signals a change in how the industry is thinking about risk — moving beyond hacks and exploits, and toward the real-world threats crypto holders increasingly face.
