X Launches Cashtags With Real-Time Financial Data for US and Canada

X has officially launched its new Cashtags feature for iPhone users in the United States and Canada, bringing real-time financial data directly into the social media platform's experience.

The rollout, announced by X product lead Nikita Bier, marks the platform's most significant move yet to position itself as a hub for the finance and crypto community.

The feature allows users to search for or post a cashtag — including crypto contract addresses — and X will automatically suggest matching stocks or tokens so users can select the exact asset they intend to reference. Tapping on any Cashtag surfaces both related posts and a live price chart, all without leaving the app.

"𝕏 has always been the best source of financial news for traders and investors. Billions of dollars are allocated every day based on what people read on Timeline." — Nikita Bier, via X

How Cashtags Work

The feature is designed to solve a long-standing problem on X: matching financial discussions to the correct asset. Here's how the new system operates:

  1. Smart matching: When a user searches for or posts a cashtag (e.g., $BTC, $AAPL) or a crypto contract address, X automatically suggests matching stocks or tokens, letting the user confirm the exact asset.

  2. Integrated price charts: Anyone who taps a Cashtag in a post will see a dedicated view combining relevant posts about that asset alongside its real-time price chart — all within the X app.

This approach ensures that conversations about a specific stock or crypto token are properly linked to the correct asset, reducing confusion — particularly in crypto, where multiple tokens can share similar names or tickers.

Wealthsimple Pilot Brings Trading to X in Canada

Alongside the Cashtags launch, X announced a pilot integration with Wealthsimple, Canada's leading brokerage platform. Canadian users will see a trade button directly on Cashtag pages, enabling them to move from reading about an asset to placing an order with a single tap.

"Our vision is more than just charts. The content on X is valuable & actionable, so trading should be frictionless." — Nikita Bier, via X

Wealthsimple confirmed the partnership in its own announcement, describing the integration as routing Canadian investors "straight to Wealthsimple to trade" whenever they tap a ticker on X.

The brokerage framed it simply: "One tap from conversation to order entry. That's it."

Bier described the Wealthsimple integration as a "small preview of what's to come," suggesting that similar brokerage partnerships for US users and potentially other markets could follow.

What This Means for Crypto on X

The inclusion of crypto tokens and contract addresses in the Cashtags system is particularly notable. X has long been the de facto real-time news feed for crypto traders, and the platform is now formalizing that role with native tooling.

By supporting contract address lookups, the feature caters to the onchain trading community, where token identification by contract address is standard practice to avoid scams and spoofed tickers.

Bier explicitly positioned Cashtags as a first step, stating:

"Cashtags are just the first step in our commitment to be the best destination for the finance and crypto community."

Current Limitations

The feature is currently limited in several ways:

  • iPhone only — no Android or web availability has been announced yet.

  • US and Canada only — no timeline for international expansion has been shared.

  • Wealthsimple trading integration is Canada-only and in pilot phase — US brokerage partnerships have not been confirmed.

The Bigger Picture

The Cashtags launch aligns with X's broader ambitions to become a financial super-app. Under Elon Musk's ownership, the platform has pursued payments licensing and explored various fintech integrations.
