Now, as the crypto world turns toward the limitless possibilities of NFTs, gamification fans have found a new foothold. Only it’s not what you think.
In most cases, games are built from the ground up. Story. Quests. Characters. Loot.
Yet when it comes to Loot, the game’s developers flipped the script.
Loot is a roleplaying game (RPG) project launched by Dom Hofmann (co-founder of Vine). It’s completely different than anything out there. Loot launched without warning with a first-come, first-served, and free-to-claim NFT collection.
The Laudable Launch of Loot
It started with 8,000 bags of loot. Each loot bag contained eight pieces of randomized adventure gear with no images and no stats. This opened the door for collectors to interpret the loot items as they see fit, thereby limiting the project only by imagination.
The Loot NFT is based on rarity. Different items occur in various loot bags a set number of times, with the rarest occurring infrequently.
Original loot bags containing adventuring gear were distributed to users, who only had to pay the gas fees associated with minting them.
The open functionality of the Loot project means that users who minted the loot bags get to decide on the items’ functionality while the rest of the Loot ecosystem must follow.
Essentially, each loot bag is a prompt. It’s an opportunity for a game, a guild, a story, and so much more. The idea being that, if provided with a prompt, the community will build.
And build, they have.
Loot Builds a Gaming Community
It didn’t take long to begin creating rarity guides for the randomly generated equipment.
They’ve built guilds for members holding a particular item. Other users developed generators to show what items may look like together on a stick figure or what certain items sound like.
In addition, Loot players have initiated projects in the works for companion animals, lore, music, supplies, and so much more.
The Future of Loot–and Beyond
What began as a list of randomly generated fantasy gear is on track to become an epic fantasy world unlike any other.
The Loot project will take loot-holders and developers alike to new places, but more importantly is the question: “Where will this take us?”
Not just in terms of Loot, but what role will the project play in opening doors to more community-sourced projects? Is NFT gaming just the beginning of a new unexplored frontier? Will NFT art connect people in a way like nothing ever has?
Gamification was a big part of 2021 and will continue to grow throughout 2022. We can expect to see similar NFT projects on the market, bringing new ideas to crypto art communities. While it can be difficult at times to determine the value of such projects, it is easy to see their potential.
For now, Loot’s simple lists of fantasy gear are selling for thousands of dollars and signal a lot of promise for the future.
