Strategy Surpasses BlackRock as Largest Institutional Bitcoin Holder

Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) has overtaken BlackRock as the largest institutional Bitcoin holder following a $2.54 billion BTC purchase — the company's third-largest acquisition to date.

The buy, confirmed by Bitcoin Magazine, tightens Strategy's grip on the Bitcoin supply and widens the gap between corporate and ETF-based institutional holdings.

The purchase follows a separate $1.5 billion acquisition earlier in 2026, which was already the company's largest buy of the year at the time. Combined, these two transactions alone represent over $4 billion in Bitcoin purchases in 2026, underscoring the scale of Strategy's accumulation strategy under Executive Chairman Michael Saylor.

Overtaking BlackRock

With the latest acquisition, Strategy now holds more Bitcoin than BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which had previously been the largest institutional vehicle for BTC exposure.

BlackRock's IBIT amassed its Bitcoin position primarily through spot ETF inflows following the January 2024 approvals, while Strategy has been steadily purchasing BTC since August 2020.

The two represent fundamentally different models: BlackRock acts as a custodian for investor demand, whereas Strategy holds Bitcoin directly on its balance sheet as a core treasury asset.

Institutional Buying Pressure

Strategy's 2026 purchases represent some of the largest institutional buying pressure in Bitcoin's history. The company has funded its acquisitions through a combination of equity offerings, convertible notes, and operating cash flow — a financing playbook Saylor has refined over several years.

The aggressive accumulation comes as Bitcoin continues to attract institutional capital from multiple vectors. Spot ETFs, corporate treasuries, and sovereign wealth funds have all increased exposure over the past 18 months, but no single entity has matched Strategy's pace of direct purchases.

What to Watch

Strategy's dominance as the top institutional holder raises questions about concentration risk and the influence a single corporate buyer can exert on Bitcoin's price dynamics.

Analysts will be watching whether the company continues its current pace of accumulation, how MSTR stock responds to the growing BTC treasury, and whether other corporations follow a similar playbook.

BlackRock's IBIT remains the largest Bitcoin ETF by assets under management, and inflows into spot ETF products continue to serve as a key barometer for broader institutional sentiment. The race between corporate treasuries and ETF vehicles for the top spot in Bitcoin holdings is likely far from over.
