For the last couple of years, discussions around the agentic economy were mostly framed in the future tense and eventualities. AI agents would soon book flights, buy products, pay for data and manage financial decisions without somebody manually approving every step. In Q4 2026, we’re beginning to see what that actually looks like at scale.

The numbers coming from the XRP Ledger are especially interesting. Recent data from XRPL AI Hub shows more than [12 million](http://xrpl-ai.org) agentic transactions settled through t54’s XRPL facilitator. The seven-day average recently exceeded 500,000 payments per day.

We are now hurtling towards an inflection point in which AI agents will initiate more financial transactions than humans do directly. A person might make a handful of purchases in a day, whereas an agent could potentially make hundreds or thousands of tiny economic decisions, buying data, accessing APIs, paying for compute, making reservations or coordinating services.

This is where XRPL starts to make a lot of sense. Agents need fast settlement, predictable fees and payment infrastructure that doesn’t require a human to constantly step back into the process. XRPL settles transactions in roughly three to five seconds, offers predictable transaction costs and supports both XRP and RLUSD for agent payments.

## The Agent Economy Needs More Than Fast Payments

It’s tempting to look at transaction numbers and turn this into another blockchain horse race, but I think that misses the bigger point. [Chainalysis](https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/x402-agentic-payments-adoption/) found that x402 transactions on Base grew from almost zero in mid-2025 to more than 100 million cumulative transactions through the end of Q1 2026.

More importantly, transactions worth at least $1 went from representing 49% of transferred volume to 95%. That suggests agentic payments are starting to move beyond tiny technical experiments.

The long-term opportunity is much bigger than agents paying other software. Imagine telling an agent to book a train from Busan to Seoul, move the reservation if your meeting changes, grab you a coffee when you arrive and order something from Nike that you need for the trip. The agent finds the merchants, compares the options, makes payments and reacts when plans change.

> Payment rails such as XRPL, Mastercard and Visa can move the money. Merchants provide the goods and services. Agents sit between them, continuously making decisions. But there’s an obvious problem: who do you trust?

Giving an autonomous piece of software unrestricted access to your money is not a great user experience. If an agent misunderstands an instruction, gets manipulated by a malicious prompt or pays the wrong merchant, fast settlement suddenly becomes a liability rather than an advantage. That’s why we’ve always argued that trust infrastructure matters just as much as payment infrastructure.

At t54 we firmly believe that financial systems need to understand which agent is acting, who authorized it, what it is allowed to do and whether a transaction matches the user’s original intent. Spending limits, risk checks, identity verification, evidence and dispute mechanisms have to sit around the payment itself. Trustline is built to make those decisions before money moves.

## XRPL Is Becoming an Operating Rail for Agents

Ripple’s XRPL AI Starter Kit already gives developers tools for building agents that can transact using XRP and RLUSD, including x402 support contributed by t54. XRPL also offers native features such as escrow, multi-signing, deposit authorization and trust lines that can help developers put boundaries around what agents are allowed to do.

We’re also building infrastructure around that settlement layer. Our XRPL x402 facilitator lets agents make machine payments while retaining control of their private keys, and our broader trust infrastructure can verify identity, intent and risk before settlement.

In all reality the future agentic economy probably won’t be one wallet, one blockchain or one payment network. Agents will move between traditional payment systems, stablecoins and decentralized networks depending on what they are trying to accomplish.  Right now, XRPL is showing clear signs that it can become a major settlement engine for that economy. The transaction numbers are exciting, but what interests me more is what sits behind them. We’re starting to see machines become genuine economic participants.

Once agents can safely hold budgets, prove authorization, purchase services and settle payments without asking a human to click “confirm” every few minutes, the internet starts to work differently. That’s the real milestone. We’re moving from AI that recommends what humans should do to AI that can actually participate in the economy on our behalf.
