**An AI assistant helps you think, write and find information. An AI agent can also use tools to carry out work.** The most useful comparison is what each product can do with your apps, how much supervision it needs and what you pay for completed work.

ChatGPT, Meta’s Muse and Grok increasingly combine both roles. OpenAI’s dots add ongoing work inside ChatGPT; they are not a separate competing chatbot. Grok Bot is also distinct from an ordinary Grok conversation.

For someone comparing these services, the question has moved beyond “Which gives the best answer?” It is now “Which can help with my actual day?”

This guide compares documented capabilities and gives you a practical way to test them. It is not a hands-on ranking or a claim that one service wins every task.

## AI Assistants Compared at a Glance

![Six modes compared: ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, ChatGPT dots, Meta Muse, Grok and Grok Bot, with uses and checks.](https://ik.imagekit.io/blockster/studio/inline/664391d2-c92a-4903-aea5-1fd0e72d25b0/4154c88c-8a38-4c1e-8a14-5cf32a745898.png)

These are different working modes within three product families. More autonomy is useful only when it improves the task you need completed.

## What Is the Difference Between an Assistant and an Agent?

An assistant might draft a reply to a customer. An agent might find the customer record, draft the reply, update a task and prepare a follow-up. Whether it can send that reply depends on its tools and your permissions.

[Google Cloud’s explanation of AI agents](https://cloud.google.com/discover/what-are-ai-agents) emphasizes pursuing goals using reasoning, planning and tools. The label does not tell you which apps a particular product can access or how reliably it will finish your workflow.

A useful way to compare products is to ask which of these jobs they support:

1. **Explain:** answer a question or summarize information.
2. **Prepare:** make a draft, spreadsheet, presentation or plan.
3. **Act:** change something in another service with your authorization.
4. **Continue:** monitor a defined task or work between conversations.

You may need only the first two. Giving an agent permission to change accounts is unnecessary if all you want is a better first draft.

## ChatGPT: From a Conversation to Finished Work

[ChatGPT’s plan comparison](https://chatgpt.com/pricing/) separates everyday conversations from features such as research, projects and ChatGPT Work. Access and allowances differ by plan.

For a straightforward task, start with a normal conversation: explain what you want, attach the relevant material and specify the format. “Compare these three supplier proposals in a table, including missing information” is more actionable than “Which supplier is best?”

[ChatGPT Work](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001275-chatgpt-work-and-codex) is the current route to longer, multi-step work and finished deliverables. Older tutorials may tell you to start the previous agent mode. OpenAI’s [agent help page](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11752874-chatgpt-agent) now directs readers to Work instead, despite retaining some older instructions below that notice.

Before paying for a higher tier, identify the specific constraint you are hitting: the amount of work, a required tool, file size or access to a particular feature. A more expensive plan is useful when it removes a relevant constraint, not simply because it exists.

## What Are ChatGPT Dots?

[Dots are ongoing agents inside ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001530-getting-started-with-your-dot), with their own cloud computer and context that carries between conversations. Their purpose is continuing responsibility: give one a goal, connect the necessary services and define what it may do independently.

As of the research date, OpenAI describes a gradual rollout to Pro users outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK; Business Premium access covers supported ChatGPT regions. Enterprise access depends on administrator settings. Initial setup uses desktop web or the desktop app.

A useful first assignment is narrow: “Every Friday, prepare a digest of the project updates I provide. Highlight overdue decisions and draft questions for me to review.” That is easier to evaluate than handing over an entire business function.

OpenAI documents controls for approvals, pausing and connected apps in its [dots privacy and safety FAQ](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001529-dots-privacy-security-and-safety-faqs). Review access separately from the task description: an instruction to be careful does not substitute for limiting account permissions.

**Name check:** ChatGPT dots should not be confused with New Computer’s older Dot companion app. [New Computer announced it was winding down that product](https://new.computer/).

## Meta Muse: Personal Tasks and Small-Business Work

[Meta describes Muse](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/09/introducing-muse-personal-ai-agent/) as a personal agent that uses a dedicated virtual computer to work across connected services. It can continue after the app closes and return when it needs input. Meta says users can review an activity trail and control app access.

Its [September small-business expansion](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/09/introducing-muse-small-business/) adds connections to services including Canva, Shopify, QuickBooks and Slack, alongside Facebook and Instagram business accounts. That announcement describes availability in the U.S. and Canada and says publishing, sending and spending require approval.

For a shop owner, a useful trial could be: provide a sales export and ask for a draft campaign based on what sold well. Check the underlying sales figures before approving the copy or advertising budget.

Meta describes a free offering with paid subscriptions for additional work. Confirm the current offer and supported connections in your account before building a workflow around it.

Blockster’s earlier coverage of [Muse’s expansion beyond the phone](https://blockster.com/metas-free-muse-agent-is-winning-fansand-moving-beyond-the-phone) provides the launch context. For choosing a tool, your own working process matters more than the hardware announcements.

## Grok and Grok Bot: Know Which Product You Mean

[Grok’s documentation](https://docs.x.ai/grok/overview) describes chat, voice, image and video creation, file analysis and connected tools. That makes the regular assistant a candidate for research, drafts and working through documents.

[Grok Bot](https://x.ai/news/introducing-grok-bot) is a separate delegation experience: bots use a cloud computer to work across apps and retain context. The launch announcement describes a beta for eligible subscriptions and examples involving sales, operations and software work.

Check the current Bot offer separately from the regular assistant plan. A subscription that supports chat does not automatically establish the cost or allowance for a long-running task.

For a fair comparison, give Grok and the other services the same source documents and ask for the same deliverable. Judge the accuracy of the result and the cleanup it needs. A confident tone is not evidence that a claim is correct.

## Which AI Assistant Fits Your Scale?

The following is an evaluation framework, not a performance ranking.

![Workflow cards compare individual, freelancer, small-business, team and customer-facing requirements.](https://ik.imagekit.io/blockster/studio/inline/664391d2-c92a-4903-aea5-1fd0e72d25b0/f646dee3-864e-4318-988c-637efad763e3.png)

A company answering customer calls has a different requirement from an employee preparing a report. Do not assume a consumer subscription includes a public website agent, telephone number or customer-service deployment.

## When an Agent Needs to Spend Money

An agent that prepares a report and one that buys computing services need different permissions. In [Blockster’s October 7 coverage of Sui and Alibaba Cloud](https://blockster.com/sui-and-alibaba-cloud-want-ai-agents-to-pay-their-own-computing-bills), the planned integration would let agents purchase services within user-set budgets. It is infrastructure under development, rather than a feature every consumer assistant already includes.

[OKX’s October 6 agent announcements](https://blockster.com/okx-wants-to-handle-more-than-your-crypto-digital-dollars-stocks-and-ai-agents) illustrate the same questions: which services can the agent use, who can receive a payment and what must a person approve? When comparing assistants, check those controls alongside the list of connected apps.

The Blockster Briefing: agent payments and digital finance — October 7, 2026. Recent reporting on the infrastructure agents may use, rather than a performance ranking of assistants.

For a financial research task, start with our [investment portfolio guide](https://blockster.com/how-to-build-investment-portfolio-etfs-crypto) or [stablecoin yield guide](https://blockster.com/stablecoin-yield-explained-usdc-rewards-apy) as source material. Ask the assistant to explain the terms and cite its evidence before authorizing any account action.

## How to Give an Agent a Useful First Task

Start with a piece of work you already know how to assess. Give it the materials it needs and make the finish line explicit.

Here is an example brief you can adapt:

> Use these three product documents to prepare a customer FAQ. Link each factual answer to its source. Flag anything the documents do not explain. Save a draft for review; do not publish it or contact customers.

That brief defines the inputs, output, evidence standard and action boundary. It also makes failure visible: if the agent invents an answer to fill a gap, you can spot it.

For recurring work, add the timing and escalation rule. Specify when an uncertain result should be brought back to a person rather than quietly carried into the next step.

## Compare the Cost of Completed Work

Subscription prices are only one part of the calculation. Depending on the service, you may also pay for extra usage, external apps or higher-volume work. Human review still takes time.

Use this simple calculation:

**Cost per accepted task = subscription share + extra usage + connected-service costs + review time.**

For example, suppose a hypothetical $30 monthly tool produces 20 usable drafts. The subscription cost is $1.50 per draft. If each requires 10 minutes of review valued at $30 an hour, review adds $5. The effective cost is $6.50 per accepted draft before other charges.

If half the drafts are unusable, the economics change. Measure accepted work rather than the number of responses generated.

Exact checkout prices are deliberately not fixed in this guide: localization, billing terms and available tiers change. Use the official plan page and your account’s usage screen for the cost you would actually pay.

## A Simple Test Before You Commit

Try the same five tasks in each product you are considering:

![Five-task framework: summarize, compare, create, prepare an action and continue; assess evidence, quality and review time.](https://ik.imagekit.io/blockster/studio/inline/664391d2-c92a-4903-aea5-1fd0e72d25b0/394980d1-5713-4cd1-b3c0-11132b4d57fe.png)

Score each task on accuracy, completeness, review time and whether the result landed in the right place. Record failures as well as successes. These five examples are an original Blockster test framework, not a claim that we ran a comparative benchmark.

For financial work, begin with explanation and research. The permission to analyze an account is different from the permission to trade. Our [crypto exchange guide](https://blockster.com/crypto-exchange-guide-compare-stocks-ai-trading-rewards-and-borrowing) explains that distinction for platforms offering trading agents.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the best AI assistant?

The best fit depends on the work. Compare the same task using your actual files, required apps and output format. A product that writes well may not be the best choice for a recurring workflow in your business software.

### Is a ChatGPT dot different from ChatGPT?

A dot is an ongoing agent within ChatGPT. It is designed to maintain context and progress between conversations. Availability depends on the account and rollout.

### Can these agents work after I close the app?

Some agent products document background work. That does not mean every chat continues automatically. Check the specific mode, task status and permissions before assuming work is running.

### Are Muse and Grok free?

Both describe free entry points and paid offerings. The relevant question is whether the work you need is included in your account, rather than whether the brand has any free product.

### Can an AI agent make purchases or send messages?

Some can, with supported tools and authorization. Read the approval settings and begin with drafts or prepared actions you can review. Give access only to the accounts needed for the task.

### Do I need to know how to code?

Everyday chat and many agent workflows use plain-language instructions. Custom integrations, complex deployment and specialized business systems may require technical setup.

### Is SI different from AI in this guide?

Blockster uses Super Intelligence, or SI, as branding in some of its coverage. The comparisons here use established product names and the term AI; they do not claim these services have achieved a scientific threshold of superintelligence.
